4.2 earthquake hits Abertillery

An earthquake has been reported online with a 4.2 magnitude and continued throughout the Gwent area.

The tremor originated 12km from the Abertillery area, A precise location thanks to allquakes.com has now been established. The tremor seams to have originated from the Merthyr Tydfil area.

Reports started on the 24th February 2023 at around 23:59 further investigation into the cause is being investigate.

Residents from Garnlydan, Brynmawr, Ebbw Vale, Tredegar and Merthyr Tydfil have all felt movement

One resident who lives in Garnlydan took to social media and said the following “Yes ours did, shaking like a leaf hear, the whole house shook, think we just witnessed an earthquake”

while another posted this “In Heathfield it just did woke me up scared me and my daughter to death did anyone else hear a bang too?”

Reports have come in from as far as the Rhondda valley “Wow!! So this happened less than half hour ago in Ebbw Vale I can see lots of people in the Rhonda Valleys felt the shaking but nothing here in Pontypridd”

Earlier this month parts of north Wales were hit by an earthquake which according to the British Geological Survey, had its the epicentre was in Llwynmawr in the Ceiriog Valley in Wrexham, at 10.08am on Saturday (February 4).

It’s unclear if the small quake was felt in the area, as it was only measured by the BGS at 0.9 on the Richter scale at a depth of 13km.

A quake was also recorded on December 27 last year which centred on Llanbedr near Crickhowell
